University of Florida President Bernie Machen Comments on Anniversary of the Recovery Act
Bernie Machen
President
University of Florida
“Florida saw the three main pillars of its economy – construction, tourism and agriculture –hit hard during the recession, and so many state leaders are looking to university-led research to help build Florida’s next economic foundation. That’s why we at the University of Florida are acutely aware of the importance of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
“In fact, the university has accepted more than $93 million in ARRA funding, which is being used to support the kinds of research that make UF a major economic engine for the state. That research includes everything from $30 million for science that will determine how exercise helps older adults to $12 million that will be used to create a network to allow scientists from all over the world to communicate and collaborate more easily on groundbreaking research. From our perspective, ARRA funding is an investment with a huge return for everyone.”
